Learn more about the sculptor and artist Brian Roscoe who was born and raised in North Wales (Snowdonia area) to a family of keen mountaineers and rock climbers.

My first proper job was working for a landscape gardener and I soon realised that I loved working outdoors with nature and doing a job that was very varied kept me keen and interested. In my early 20‘s I studied at arboriculture and went into a career of working with trees as a climber/arborist in the North London area and have continued to work in this industry for over 20 years.

I once pruned a rare mimosa tree for a ceramic sculptor in Kentish town North London, we were chatting and I mentioned I was interested in sculpture, he turned around to me and said “Oh I think what your doing is far more sculptural than what I do he said, it’s really hard to get a good shape when your working on that larger scale as it’s hard to see what your doing, and besides every cut your making is to a specific growth point”.

The more I thought about this the more I realised I could use this skill for shaping wood not just trees.

As a tree surgeon/arborist I always had access to plenty of wood and chainsaws to carve with, so over the years I continued to make things from wood and develop my skills further. This has lead to the position that I’m in today. I now live and work in Winchester, Hampshire.

I tend to make a variety of different items from functional designer/sculptural furniture through to abstract sculpture and forms.

I am keen to take commissioned work and projects and can work with designers/clients in a variety of situations and places.

All the wood we use is sustainable as it comes from trees that are mainly dead, dying and dangerous and it would otherwise go for log wood.
